Eckmühl Lighthouse: A Gem of Breton Heritage Near the Domaine de la Baie d’Audierne

Located just about a 30-minute drive from the holiday residence Le Domaine de la Baie d’Audierne, the Eckmühl Lighthouse is a must-see for lovers of maritime heritage, history, and breathtaking panoramas. Perched at the tip of the Pointe de Penmarc’h, this lighthouse is one of the most majestic in Brittany, proudly towering over the sea for more than a century.

An Exceptional Lighthouse Steeped in History

Inaugurated in 1897, the Eckmühl Lighthouse owes its name to the Countess of Blocqueville, daughter of Marshal Davout, Duke of Eckmühl, who funded its construction in tribute to her father. Standing at an impressive 65 meters tall, it is one of the tallest lighthouses in France, offering sweeping views over the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding coastline.

Reaching the top requires climbing 307 spiral steps, but the effort is richly rewarded with a unique spectacle: a bird’s-eye view of the Pointe de Penmarc’h, the Glénan Islands, and, on clear days, an endless horizon. The beauty of its architecture, built with noble materials such as Kersanton granite, adds to the prestigious character of this historic monument.
